This Year’s Winter Home Maintenance Checklist for North Carolina
North Carolina’s mild climate makes it a wonderful place to call home, offering a delightful balance of all four seasons. From crisp autumn days to refreshing winters, the state’s weather rarely brings the extreme conditions seen in other regions.
However, this winter may hold some surprises. According to the latest La Niña forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), we could experience an above-average winter with higher-than-normal temperatures. While the La Niña pattern may remain weak through March, its effects could also contribute to drier conditions, raising drought concerns across the Southeast. While we might not face extreme cold, it’s still wise to prepare your home for winter’s challenges, as unexpected temperature dips are always a possibility.
To help you stay ahead this season, I’ve put together a Winter Home Maintenance Checklist tailored to North Carolina homeowners. Taking these steps now can help you protect your home and enjoy a safe, worry-free winter.
Winter Home Maintenance Checklist:
Winterize Your Irrigation System
Turn off your irrigation system and drain the backflow to prevent freezing and potential damage.Disconnect Outdoor Water Hoses
Remove any water hoses attached to outdoor faucets. This prevents water from freezing in the hose, which could lead to pressure buildup and cracked pipes.Insulate Outdoor Faucets (Hose Bibs)
Use insulated covers on your outdoor water faucets to shield them from the cold.Protect Exposed Pipes
Check for any exposed pipes on the exterior of your home and wrap them with insulation to prevent freezing.Maintain Indoor Temperatures
Keep your home’s thermostat set to at least 68°F, even when you’re away, to prevent pipes from freezing.Open Cabinet Doors Along Exterior Walls
If you have sinks installed on exterior walls, open the cabinet doors underneath them. This allows warm air to circulate around the pipes.Leave Faucets Dripping
In extremely cold conditions, leaving a faucet dripping can prevent frozen pipes by keeping water flowing.Fireplace Maintenance
Before cozying up this winter, ensure your fireplace is in tip-top shape. Have the chimney inspected and cleaned, check for any blockages, and test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. A safe, clean fireplace makes for a worry-free winter.Secure Other Vulnerable Items
Take inventory of outdoor equipment, plumbing, and appliances that may be exposed to winter weather. Winterize them to avoid damage.
Why Winter Maintenance Matters
Even with an above-average winter forecast, North Carolina’s weather can be unpredictable. Sudden cold snaps, even brief ones, can damage your home if you’re unprepared. Following this checklist will help you avoid costly repairs and ensure your home stays safe, warm, and comfortable all season long.
